However, it was perhaps his appointment as the First and Founder Vice-Chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi Central University, Bihar (MGCU), that provided Prof. Agrawal with a platform to realize his visionary leadership and transformative agenda. Prof. (Dr.) Arvind Kumar Agrawal is a distinguished academic luminary with a profound impact on higher education and societal development. His illustrious career began in 1976, when he completed his M.A. as the top student in the Department of Sociology at the University of Rajasthan, Jaipur. This achievement earned him a Junior Research Fellowship to pursue a M.Phil/Ph.D. at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.

Prof. Agrawal served the University of Rajasthan from 1979 to 2012, marking a significant 32-year tenure. In 1985, he received the prestigious Salzburg Seminar Fellowship, and in 1986, he became the only sociologist in India to be awarded the German Academic Exchange Fellowship (DAAD) to conduct doctoral research at Heidelberg University. His scholarly prowess was further recognized in 2011 with the International Award from the RCSL of the International Sociological Association, where he also served as vice president from 2014 to 2018.

Prof. Agrawal’s visionary leadership was evident during his tenure as the First and Founder Vice-Chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi Central University, Bihar, where he established the institution as a center of academic excellence. He also contributed to the development of a new central university in Himachal Pradesh, Dharamshala, serving as OSD (Academics).
